In light of black history month, I figure it was only right to acknowledge an African American making a wave in the fashion world. Her name is June Ambrose and even if you are not familiar with her, you will be sometime soon. She is a stylist to the stars, budding fashion designer and will soon have her own VH1 reality show about her journey. She is the CEO of her own styling firm, The Mode Squad, which she started in 1994. It has since grown and she has styled major celebrities in the hip hop and R&B world such as Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Chrisette Michele and many more. Her most famous look would probably be the infamous trash bag Missy Elliot wore in her I Can’t Stand the Rain video.
I look to June Ambrose as inspiration. She started with nothing and made turned it into something. She realized that the fashion world is competitive but did not give up. As someone who aspires to be a stylist, she is truly inspiring. Besides knowing how to dress celebrities, she is also a trend setter herself. She has a very eccentric but still sophisticated style; very reminiscent of the late 60, early 70’s.
